A Brief History Of Plumbing
Plumbing is the system of pipes, drain fittings, valves, valve connections, and devices for your building. It’s the water distribution system for drinking, heating and washing, as well as the removal of water-borne wastes.
The plumbing network in your home is made up of two different, and separate, sub-systems. One of them brings fresh water in, and the other system takes your wastewater out. The way that water enters your home is under high pressure. Water enters your home under enough pressure to allow it to travel up to your second floor and back down again. As the water enters into your home, it passes through a meter, and that registers the amount of water you use. The main water stop valve (also called a shut off valve) is typically located close to the meter. In the event of any kind of plumbing emergency, it’s essential that you shut the main valve off as quickly as possible. If you don’t, its a possibility your house can be flooded in minutes. Now, if the emergency is contained to a single sink or toilet, you probably won’t want to turn off the entire water supply to your home. For this very reason, most household fixtures have individual stop valves.
The main supply is always ready for your cold water needs as it comes cold. The hot water supply is a different story, and needs an additional connection to the hot water heater. Once the cold water hits the hot water heater and converts, a hot water line carries the heated water to your faucet, tub/shower, dishwasher, etc. that use hot water. The thermostat on the heater maintains the temperature you select. Generally, the normal thermostat setting for a home water heater is between 140 -160 degrees F. Many homeowners choose to keep their thermometer at around 120 degrees for economic reasons. In recent years, high tech or “smart” dishwashers require higher temperature water.
Sanitization is considered the prevention of human contact with toxic wastes. Before we had indoor plumbing, human waste would be thrown into the street, and/or nearby waterways ,which was responsible for many different diseases. We have the Romans to thank for running water and they are responsible with the first plumbing system using a intricate system of aqueducts powered by gravity.
In 2020, we barely think about how easily we use plumbing services–except when they aren’t working! Around the beginning of the 20th century, public health authorities began advocating for better removal and disposal of wastes. Sewage treatment plants were soon operational, purifying the wastewater and disposing of it properly. Lead piping was used at first in most buildings. Use of lead pipes declined sharply after World War II, after news of lead poisoning became widespread. Copper piping was later used instead because it’s safer and better then lead, then PB piping for a time. PB piping is not utilized anymore for the reasons below.
Polybutylene Piping
From 1978 to 1995, Polybutylene (PB) piping was installed in millions of homes by plumbing contractors and builders because it was a cheaper alternative to copper. The pipes are typically white or grey with a dull finish, and was used for underground water mains and throughout the house as interior water distribution. Sometimes both PB and copper were used in conjunction. Many homes plumbing have been under siege from busted PB pipes for quite some time now. What happens is that chemicals in the water react with the piping and cause brittleness and fractures resulting in the integrity of the structure to fail. More and more we see homes and businesses in our area that had this piping installed start to fail. A-1 American can send out help as far north as Williamsburg, VA. Polybutylene piping repair and replacement is no match for the plumbers at A-1 American Services. You can count on us!
Plumbing sure has come a long way, from pipes using gravity in ancient times to modern-day copper piping using advanced high-pressure systems to control water supply.
